Key turns but nothing happens? Or is it just spinning like a loose ceiling fan?

If your key is still fine but the car won't start—or worse, the internal bits of your steering lock have snapped like a dry twig—you don't need a whole new expensive lock and key set. You just need this: the Ignition Steering Lock Housing and Switch.

This is the "heavy lifting" part of the ignition assembly. It’s the main housing that bolts to the column and includes the electrical switch at the back. It’s a common failure point on VAG vehicles where the internal casting goes bust, leaving you stranded at the Bunnings car park with a car that won't crank.

Note: This kit does not include the lock barrel or the keys. You simply swap your existing lock cylinder into this new housing, meaning you keep your original keys and don't have to worry about the immobiliser. Too easy!

Check your part number, but if it looks like the one in the photo and you're driving a mid-2000s to early 2010s VW, this is likely the culprit. Save yourself a trip to the dealer and a few hundred bucks while you're at it.
